Artist’s Statement

My work explores the emotional and visual power of contrast between light and darkness, presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity. Working in black and white, I strip away the distraction of color to focus on what remains; form, shadow, and the quiet tension created when light reveals only a part of a story.

I am drawn to the way light defines space, and how it sculpts the unseen, giving shape to emotion. In my paintings, illumination is not just a technical element, it is a narrative force. Light becomes a guide, revealing what demands to be seen, while allowing other elements to dissolve into shadow. This balance creates a sense of mystery, inviting the viewer to linger, question and interpret.

My process is intuitive yet deliberate. I build each piece through layers of value, carefully adjusting contrast to create depth and movement. The absence of color heightens sensitivity to subtle shifts in tone, allowing even the smallest variations in light to carry weight. Through this restraint, I aim to evoke a heightened awareness, where stillness feels charged, while simplicity becomes complex. By reducing the visual language to black and white, I create space for the viewer to discover their own feelings and meaning within the composition.

Ultimately, my work is about presence. It’s about slowing down long enough to notice the quiet drama unfolding in light and shadow. In a world saturated with color and constant stimulation, I aim to create spaces of visual stillness that feel both grounding and evocative. Through contrast, I seek not only to define form, but to reveal something more intangible; a sense of depth, emotion and the beauty found within restraint.
